The Stiftung für Tech­nolo­gie, Inno­va­tion und Forschung Thürin­gen (STIFT) and the Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Hol­z­land invest in an inno­v­a­tive ther­a­peu­tics com­pany in Jena

Smart­Dye­Liv­ery, in Jena, uses nanopar­ti­cles to direct ther­a­peu­tic com­pounds directly to tar­geted organs. With a patented tech­nol­ogy based on func­tional nanopar­ti­cles, Smart­Dye­Liv­ery con­vinced the STIFT to join the Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Hol­z­land, which increased its invest­ment, and bm|t as key insti­tu­tional share­hold­ers, in the aspir­ing biotech­nol­ogy company.

Smart­Dye­Liv­ery, in coöper­a­tion with Jena Uni­ver­sity pro­fes­sors Ulrich S. Schu­bert and Michael Bauer, has devel­oped a nanopar­ti­cle that seeks its tar­get with high accu­racy and then releases the trans­ported com­pound directly into the tar­geted organ. In addi­tion to organ-spe­cific com­pound trans­porta­tion, SmartDyeLivery´s tech­nol­ogy can enable the mea­sure­ment of organ function.

The company´s first tar­get is patients that have sep­sis-related liver fail­ure. Due to a lack of ther­a­peu­tic options, more than 90% of these patients do not sur­vive. Each year in Ger­many alone over 1,500 lives could be saved with a safe and effec­tive treat­ment for sep­sis-related liver fail­ure. “The lat­est pre-clin­i­cal data demon­strate the enor­mous poten­tial in our first clin­i­cal appli­ca­tion of this tech­nol­ogy, and prove that we are on the right path,” said Dr. Marc Lehmann, Man­ag­ing Direc­tor of the Jena biotech company.
