The Stiftung für Technologie, Innovation und Forschung Thüringen (STIFT) and the Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland invest in an innovative therapeutics company in Jena
SmartDyeLivery, in Jena, uses nanoparticles to direct therapeutic compounds directly to targeted organs. With a patented technology based on functional nanoparticles, SmartDyeLivery convinced the STIFT to join the Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland, which increased its investment, and bm|t as key institutional shareholders, in the aspiring biotechnology company.
SmartDyeLivery, in coöperation with Jena University professors Ulrich S. Schubert and Michael Bauer, has developed a nanoparticle that seeks its target with high accuracy and then releases the transported compound directly into the targeted organ. In addition to organ-specific compound transportation, SmartDyeLivery´s technology can enable the measurement of organ function.
The company´s first target is patients that have sepsis-related liver failure. Due to a lack of therapeutic options, more than 90% of these patients do not survive. Each year in Germany alone over 1,500 lives could be saved with a safe and effective treatment for sepsis-related liver failure. “The latest pre-clinical data demonstrate the enormous potential in our first clinical application of this technology, and prove that we are on the right path,” said Dr. Marc Lehmann, Managing Director of the Jena biotech company.
