The first “Navigation System” for drugs – soon to be developed in Thuringia

  • 2016

Drugs that target only the diseased organs and cells of the body, thereby causing fewer side effects – this is the goal pursued by SmartDyeLivery GmbH from Jena. bm|t (beteiligungsmanagement thüringen GmbH) and Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland have jointly agreed to ensure start-up financing for this innovative concept, and they agree that this life-saving technological innovation from Thuringia must be supported.

SmartDyeLivery GmbH is a spin-off from Friedrich Schiller University Jena and University Hospital Jena and was founded by Professors Ulrich S. Schubert und Michael Bauer. The research team, sponsored by the Free State of Thuringia and the federal government, has completed feasibility analysis in which they successfully produced nanoparticles equipped with both pharmaceutical ingredients and a “navigation system” so that they could be released with specificity and control into target areas. Particularly of note, this navigation system can be used for diagnostic applications, such as the determination of organ function or the transport efficiency of particles.

For the first area of practical application, SmartDyeLivery GmbH is focusing on the development of a therapy for patients with septic liver failure. Today, these patients die in over 90% of cases. This high mortality rate can be reduced through innovative technological therapies – in Germany alone, more than 1,500 lives could be saved. Directors Dr. Georg Hochwimmer und Dr. Marc Lehmann are confident that this technology platform has a wide spectrum of other applications, such as in cancer therapy.

About SmartDyeLivery GmbH: SmartDyeLivery develops specific, nanoparticle-based drug transporters for therapeutic and theranostic applications. In 2015, the company was awarded the Special Prize for Young Companies from the Thuringia Innovation Awards.
