Scienova receives 1 million euros in venture capital

Sev­eral investors have put ven­ture cap­i­tal into Jena-based Scien­ova GmbH, a com­pany which devel­ops spe­cialised and func­tion­alised bio-instru­ments and lab­o­ra­tory con­sum­ables for cus­tomers in the phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal and biotech indus­tries. The largest inter­est has been acquired by bm|t beteili­gungs­man­age­ment thürin­gen gmbh. At the same time the Jena-based risk-cap­i­tal com­pany Tow­er­Ven­ture was secured as a pri­vate investor. Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Hol­z­land under­lined its strong com­mit­ment to tech­nol­ogy-based busi­nesses in the region by its par­tic­i­pa­tion in the investor pool.

Through this financ­ing it is the investors’ inten­tion to sig­nif­i­cantly accel­er­ate prod­uct devel­op­ment and pave the way for Scien­ova to make a rapid mar­ket entry. Scien­ova was founded in 2008. The main focus of the company’s activ­i­ties is the devel­op­ment and man­u­fac­ture of so-called high-through­put-screen­ing (HTS) solu­tions for phar­ma­co­log­i­cal research.

In this process thou­sands of bio­chem­i­cal or phar­ma­co­log­i­cal tests are con­ducted at very high speed. “Scienova’s bio-instru­ments and lab­o­ra­tory mate­ri­als facil­i­tate faster, more eco­nom­i­cal, active agent screen­ing processes. The finan­cial and time expen­di­ture in the inves­ti­ga­tion and devel­op­ment of a new drug are sub­stan­tially reduced”, explains Scienova’s man­ag­ing direc­tor Robert Fleischhauer.

Scien­ova GmbH emerged in 2008 as a spin-off from the Insti­tute of Bio­chem­istry at the Uni­ver­sity Clinic of Jena. The com­pany is engaged in the devel­op­ment and man­u­fac­ture of high-through­put solu­tions for research into active phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal agents, in par­tic­u­lar in the field of ADME screen­ing. At the end of 2008 Scien­ova was named as the win­ner of the Thuringia Busi­ness Plan competition.

Tow­er­Ven­ture eG invests and sup­ports busi­ness ideas with future promise in the tech­nol­ogy sec­tor. The mem­bers put their entre­pre­neur­ial knowl­edge and net­works at the dis­posal of the asso­ci­ated com­pa­nies. Mem­bers of the Tow­er­Ven­ture eG have a broad range of expe­ri­ence as founders or man­agers of rapidly-grow­ing busi­nesses as well as sell­ing and tak­ing busi­nesses pub­lic, and they com­bine ele­ments of their activ­i­ties as busi­ness angels for Tow­er­Ven­ture eG.
